What is Nizoral Anti-Dandruff Shampoo and what is it used for?

Nizoral Anti-Dandruff Shampoo is designed to treat and relieve symptoms of seborrhoeic dermatitis, dandruff, tinea versicolor and pityriasis versicolor. Most sufferers of these conditions have a lack of yeast balance on the scalp. Nizoral actively fights this condition, deals with itchy, flaky scalp and associate inflammation. It also prevents these symptoms from returning.

The active ingredient in Nizoral Anti-Dandruff Shampoo is ketoconazole, an antifungal, anti-yeast medication that is used to treat certain skin conditions, including dandruff. This shampoo is manufactured by Thornton and Ross and is suitable for use by adults and children over the age of 12 years.

How does Nizoral Anti-Dandruff Shampoo work?

Nizoral shampoo contains Ketoconazole that worked by binding to the hair’s natural protein and destroys fungi and yeasts by preventing them from producing a substance called ergosterol, an essential component of fungal cell membranes. This disrupts the fungal cell membrane, causing holes to appear in it and allowing essential cell components to leak out. This kills the fungi and clears up the infection, keeping dandruff and its associated symptoms at bay.

Nizoral Anti-Dandruff Shampoo warnings

 

Reading the following warnings carefully will help to ensure you are selecting an appropriate product.

  • Seek advice before using if you are breastfeeding, pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or suffering from allergies
  • Keep all medicines out of the reach of children
  • For external use only

Please read all packaging and the Product Information Leaflet before taking any new medicine and inform your doctor of medicines you are taking or intend to take.

 

 

Adults, including the elderly and children over the age of 12 years:

  • Wet hair thoroughly
  • Apply a small amount to the scalp. Work into a lather.
  • For best results leave on scalp for 3-5 minutes.
  • Rinse thoroughly.

 

For the first 2 to 4 weeks:

Use every 3 or 4 days to clear dandruff.

Thereafter:

Use once every 1 or 2 weeks to prevent dandruff from coming back.

If your scalp has not cleared after 4 weeks, you may not have dandruff and should seek further advice from your pharmacist or doctor.

Active Ingredients

The active ingredients contained in this medicine is: Ketoconazole 20mg/g.

The medicine also contains the following inactive ingredients: Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulphate, Disodium Monolauryl Ether Sulphosuccinate, Coconut Fatty Acid Diethanolamide, Laurdimonium Hydrolysed Animal Collagen, Macrogol 120 Methyl Glucose Dioleate, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Hydroxide, Imidurea, Hydrochloric Acid, Erythrosine (E127) and Purified Water.

 

Nizoral Anti-Dandruff Shampoo side effects

Not everyone will experience side effects when they take medication, however, if you do they can include:

  • Burning sensation
  • Itching (pruritus)
  • Allergic inflammation of the skin (contact dermatitis)
  • Dry hair
  • Oily hair
  • Discolouration of hair (rare and mainly affecting chemically damaged or grey hair)
  • Eczema
  • Hair loss
