General Questions

What is Avoca and what is it used for?

Avoca’s Complete Wart & Verruca Treatment is a quick and reliable method for getting rid of persistent warts and verrucas most commonly seen on the hands and feet. Avoca will target the wart or verruca directly, using the active ingredient silver nitrate, contained within a caustic pencil.

Once the product has been left to dry for 24 hours, the treated layer of tissue will turn black and can be removed with the emery board provided. Most warts and verrucas are removed within one week of treatment. Avoca cannot be used to treat genital warts.

What are warts and verrucas?

Warts and verrucas are small, rough bumps that most commonly appear on the hands and feet but that can develop anywhere on the body. They are caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), they are very common and are very contagious. They can cause some pain or discomfort but for most people, they do not cause any symptoms. Most of the time warts and verrucas will clear up on their own without treatment, however, using a treatment such as Avoca can help speed up the healing process.

How does Avoca work?

Avoca is used to apply silver nitrate precisely to the skin affected by warts and verrucas. It works by chemically cauterising the skin, which means it destroys any unwanted tissue. This process kills warts and verrucas turning the dead skin black that can then be filed away used the provided emery board.

Avoca warts and verruca treatment warnings

Reading the following warnings carefully will help to ensure you are selecting an appropriate product.

This treatment is unsuitable for you if you are allergic to any of its ingredients.

Avoca should not be used on:

  • The skin near the eyes
  • Genital warts
  • Other sensitive areas of skin

Take care once you have begun to dissolve the caustic pencil in water as silver nitrate will stain any absorbent material.

Please read all packaging and the Product Information Leaflet before taking any new medicine and inform your doctor of medicines you are taking or intend to take.

How to use Avoca warts and verruca treatment

  1. Before applying silver nitrate to the skin, you will first need to dissolve it in a small amount of water. Only one drop is required. Put one drop in a non-absorbent container.
  2. Swirl the tip of the caustic pencil in this drop for roughly 20 seconds. This will allow the active ingredient to dissolve in the water. Keep this water away from any absorbent materials, as it may cause damage or discolouration.
  3. Once the tip is wet, touch it very gently to your wart or verruca. Take care as the tip will break if you apply too much pressure.
  4. Once the area is dry, some tissue will fall away on its own. Use the emery board after 24 hours to remove the surface layer of the treated area.

This process can be repeated until the wart or verruca has been removed.
